The Tennessee Volunteers (Vols) will be heading to Destin this season to participate in the Emerald Coast Classic. Reportedly, they've now effectively made their plans for the 2020 season. Jeff Goodman tweeted on May 7, 2019 that Tennessee will be a part of the 2020 Charleston Classic Tournament. Houston, Florida State, Seton Hall, VCU, Oklahoma State, Penn State, and Charleston will make up the remainder of the field, as indicated by Goodman.
Tennessee will be in the same field as Florida State and VCU this season in the Emerald Coast Classic, along with Purdue. The Vols played in the preseason NIT Tournament in Brooklyn last season and made a trip to the Bahamas to participate in the Battle 4 Atlantis the year before that. Looking back even further, Tennessee played in the Maui Invitational in 2016-17. Tennessee now has Memphis (in Nashville), Cincinnati, and Wisconsin on schedule for the 2019-20 season.
These early season competitions kind of toss the Vols into the fire, giving the college b-ball world a glance at what might be brought to the table in March. Tennessee made their comeback in the basketball scene in 2017 in the Bahamas. They left that week having gained two resume-building wins over N.C. State and Purdue. Additionally, the Vols got a nice win over a good Louisville group this year, while almost toppling the then No. 1 Kansas in Brooklyn.
The Vols will have a chance to do something very similar throughout the following two seasons.
